WiseFood Mid-Year Milestones: First Newsletter Edition

It’s been six months since the WiseFood project began, and we’re already seeing great progress. Since January, our team has been working together to create three easy-to-use, AI-powered tools that help people make healthier food choices. In our first newsletter, we highlighted some of the key achievements so far. If you missed it, here is a quick recap.

WiseFood’s Consortium Meeting in Greece

Back in January, we officially kicked off the WiseFood project in Athens. Our coordinator, Dimitris Skoutas from the Athena Research and Innovation Centre, welcomed nine organisations from across Europe, all bringing their own strengths to the table. Together, we kicked off the project with a shared vision: to promote healthier dietary habits and reduce ecological footprints through three user-friendly, AI-powered applications.

Joint webinar: STELAR & WiseFood

On July 18, WiseFood hosted its first joint webinar with another project. Along with the STELAR project, we focused on how LLM-based dataset search and integration are enhancing efficiency and impact in agrifood applications.

The audience heard from experts, including members of our own consortium!

  • Dr. Dimitris Skoutas (Athena Research Center), coordinator of both projects, opened the session with an introduction to WiseFood and STELAR.
  • Petros Skoufis (Athena Research Center) presented approaches for augmenting dataset descriptions and improving discovery in data catalogues.
  • Konstantinos Andrikos (Infili Technologies S.A.) shared how enriched recipe descriptions can support healthier, more sustainable, and personalised food recommendations.

RCSI at the National Healthcare Outcomes Conference 2025

Dr. Claire Timon from our partner organisation, RCSI School of Population Health, presented the WiseFood project at the National Healthcare Outcomes Conference 2025. Her presentation, “Harnessing AI to Drive Healthy and Sustainable Food Choices at the Household Level”, explored the potential of artificial intelligence to support healthier, more sustainable eating habits in everyday life.

Dr. Timon highlighted how AI can be a powerful tool in shaping household food choices, aligning health, sustainability, and technology in practical, impactful ways.

International Agricultural Fair in Serbia

Our partner organisation, Foodscale Hub, proudly represented WiseFood at the 92nd International Agricultural Fair, the largest and most well-known agricultural event in the Balkan region. Held in Novi Sad, Serbia, the fair brought together thousands of participants from across the agri-food sector.

At the event, the Foodscale Hub team actively connected with a diverse group of local and regional stakeholders, including food producers, IT solution providers, agricultural experts, and citizens. It was a great opportunity to introduce the WiseFood project to a wider audience and share our mission: to support healthier eating habits and contribute to more sustainable food systems across Europe. The team also gathered valuable feedback and insights, helping ensure that our solutions truly meet the needs of those working in and impacted by the food ecosystem.

Joining Forces with DietWise

WiseFood was also presented by our coordinator during the 2nd Plenary Meeting of the DietWise project. This session offered a valuable opportunity to explore synergies and potential collaboration between our two sister initiatives, both focused on improving nutrition and promoting healthier lifestyles. The exchange sparked interest in joint opportunities to amplify impact and share best practices across both projects.

Monthly Living Lab Updates

We hold monthly sessions with our Living Labs partners to maintain strong collaboration and keep everyone aligned on project goals. Each month, leaders from the Living Labs, including RCSI, ESSRG, Wasteless Foundation, and Green Point, join the project coordinator for in-depth meetings. These sessions serve as a platform to review the progress made so far, openly discuss any challenges or roadblocks, and ensure that expectations are clear and shared across the consortium.

Moreover, these gatherings provide a valuable space to explore regional differences and specific local contexts, which is crucial for tailoring our approaches and maximising the relevance of our work.

A Glimpse into Our Living Labs Activities

Hungarian Living Lab

The leaders of the Hungarian Living Lab, Wasteless Foundation and ESSRG have launched the Living Lab event series, marking an exciting milestone in the WiseFood project.

They introduced the WiseFood mission to a broader audience and brought together a diverse mix of participants, including dietitians, policy-makers, nutrition scientists, and representatives from different household types. The event offered real-world perspectives that will directly inform the development of WiseFood’s digital tools and ensure they are aligned with users’ everyday needs.

Slovenian Living Lab

Our partners and Slovenian Living Lab leaders, Green Point (GP), hosted the event to present the WiseFood project and engage directly with local stakeholders.

The day offered valuable insights and meaningful discussions around healthy and sustainable food choices. As one of the three Living Labs in the project, GP is playing a key role in testing our smart digital tools with real users in real-life settings, bringing the WiseFood mission to life on the ground.

WiseFood in the News: Gaining Momentum Across Europe

In just seven months since its launch, WiseFood is already attracting media attention across Europe. This growing recognition highlights the project’s timely focus on promoting healthier, more sustainable food choices for individuals and communities. Coverage in national and regional outlets reflects the relevance of WiseFood’s mission to tackle pressing issues such as nutrition literacy, food waste, and the environmental impact of dietary habits.

As the project moves forward, this media momentum is helping raise awareness, engage stakeholders, and foster public dialogue around the challenges and opportunities in transforming food systems.

WiseFood Knowledge Hub

In the first months of the WiseFood project, we launched the WiseFood Newsroom, a go-to space for insightful, accessible content on the challenges and science behind healthy and sustainable eating. Designed for a broad audience, including dietitians, researchers, students, educators, and anyone interested in improving food systems or personal eating habits, the Newsroom provides clearly written articles grounded in scientific research. The content is crafted to make complex topics easy to understand and relevant across disciplines, supporting learning, discussion, and informed decision-making.
