WiseFood Winter Update: Six Months in Review

Main visual for winter update and look back on the past six months.

As we wrap up the first year of the project, we invite you to explore our winter update and look back on the past six months, from project meetings and events to research activities and collaborations across Europe.

But first, a quick reminder of what WiseFood is all about.

WiseFood is a three-year Horizon Europe project working to support healthier and more sustainable food choices through innovative digital solutions. By developing three digital applications for citizens, the project aims to encourage healthier eating habits, reduce the environmental impact of food consumption, and help build a more informed and environmentally conscious society.

WiseFood to Develop 3 Smart Applications: First Versions Coming Early 2026!

Our partners – Athena Research and Innovation Centre (ATHENA), Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and Infili Technologies S.A. (INFILI) – have been working hard these past months in order to ensure that the first versions of the apps and their demos are available in early 2026!

What Wise Technologies Will Drive Them?

The project uses Knowledge Graphs to organise reliable food-related data and enable easier navigation through complex information. In parallel, Large Language Models (LLMs) support advanced personalisation and more intuitive user interaction, helping users receive guidance tailored to their needs and preferences.

How Are Our Living Labs Coming Along?

The applications will be co-designed and tested with citizens and other stakeholders in real-world settings through Living Labs in Ireland, Hungary, and Slovenia – three countries with diverse cultural and socio-economic characteristics, thus ensuring the solutions are relevant across different contexts.

Currently, we are in the first phase of organising the co-design sessions which will take place in spring 2026, where both citizen participants and experts will have a chance to explore the apps through the offered demos.

The co-design sessions will allow the project to later move to the second phase where 300 households will evaluate the apps.

WiseFood-funded Publications

We began our scientific dissemination this May with a paper presented at the ‘Better health outcomes from digital health?’ National Healthcare Outcomes Conference. Our consortium member Claire Timon from Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) – and our Irish Living Lab leaders – presented Wisefood: harnessing AI to drive healthy and sustainable food choice at a household level.

The Events We Have Participated In

From our July newsletter until now, we have participated in several different events, thanks to our dynamic team!

AGRA Fair in Gornja Radgona, Slovenia

This August, Sasa Straus and Tamara Kozic from the organisation of our Slovenian Living Lab leaders, the Green Point Living Lab, promoted the WiseFood project to an audience of tens of thousands from the agri-food sector, policymakers, and the general public. They introduced the concept of co-creation, highlighting opportunities for involvement in shaping the WiseFood solution.

IUNS-ICN 2025 in Paris, France

At the same time, Claire Timon from RCSI held a presentation titled WiseFood Project: A Protocol for Utilising Artificial Intelligence to Enhance Healthy and Sustainable Household Food Choices! They also represented us while showcasing research on language models in nutrition and dietetics, and while highlighting how technology is shaping the future of nutrition. Fittingly, this year’s theme was  “Sustainable Food for Global Health” and there were 117 countries represented.

Media Spotlight

In addition to several media appearances during these few months, we were also featured in July as the cover story for the Irish Nutrition & Dietetic Institute INDI! We are grateful for the opportunity, and for the articleThe Changing Digital Landscape of Dietetics, written by Cathal O’Hara from RCSI.
