AI Appreciation Day: Celebrating the Power of Innovation

AI Appreciation Day 2025

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming our world, touching nearly every aspect of our lives and making many things easier than ever before. Yet, many people still feel uncertain, unsure whether to fear AI or embrace it. Regardless of how you feel, one thing is clear: AI deserves our appreciation. That’s why World AI Appreciation Day was created – to celebrate innovation and welcome the smart era we live in.

In this article, we will explore what this day means and why WiseFood proudly celebrates AI Appreciation Day.

A Brief History of AI Appreciation Day

Artificial Intelligence Appreciation Day was established in May 2021 by A.I. Heart LLC to celebrate the positive impact of AI technology on society. Officially celebrated every year on July 16, the day serves as an opportunity to:

  • Recognise AI’s growing contributions to our daily lives
  • Encourage thoughtful conversation and raise awareness of the ethical use of AI
  • Celebrate the remarkable achievements of AI and its potential to shape the future
  • Promote responsible development

AI first appeared in human imagination through fiction, as a powerful storytelling tool. A famous early example in fiction is Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, which raised some of the same ethical questions we are still asking today.

In the early 1900s, philosophers and mathematicians began exploring mechanical reasoning. This line of thinking led to the groundbreaking work of Alan Turing, who showed that machines could perform any logical task using basic symbols, laying the basis for modern computing.

Key Milestones in AI Development

  • 1943: The first recognised AI system was created using artificial neurons by McCulloch and Pitts
  • 1956: The field of AI research officially began at a workshop held at Dartmouth College
  • 1980s: The AI market grew rapidly, reaching over $1 billion
  • 2010s: Deep learning transformed how machines recognise speech and images
  • 2020s: Generative AI tools like ChatGPT entered mainstream use and became part of daily life

Celebrating AI Appreciation Day Around the World

Since its early beginnings, the development of artificial intelligence has brought countless benefits to many areas of human life, from healthcare and nutrition to environmental protection, education, transportation, and more.

Recognising its growing influence, people and organisations around the world celebrate AI Appreciation Day in a variety of ways. These activities aim to highlight the positive impact of AI while also encouraging responsible and ethical use. Common ways to mark the day include:

  • Hosting discussions and expert panels
  • Organising workshops and educational seminars
  • Supporting and promoting ethical AI initiatives
  • Showcasing innovative AI-driven projects and solutions
  • Exploring new knowledge through AI-related courses, articles, or documentaries

How WiseFood Uses AI to Empower Citizens to Make Healthier and Eco-Friendly Food Choices

.WiseFood is a three-year project funded by the European Union, focused on promoting healthier eating habits and reducing environmental impact. At the heart of the project are three innovative, AI-powered applications that will be co-developed and tested by citizens through the WiseFood Living Labs.

  • FoodScholar is a user-friendly app that allows individuals to ask questions about the nutritional value and environmental impact of the foods they eat. It delivers clear, reliable answers to help users make more informed food choices.
  • RecipeWrangler evaluates recipes based on both nutrition and sustainability. It offers detailed insights into each recipe and enables users to modify ingredients or cooking methods to discover healthier and more eco-conscious alternatives.
  • FoodChat provides personalised meal plans and recipe recommendations tailored to individual preferences. It aims to minimise food waste while supporting well-balanced, nutritious diets.

All three tools are being developed in line with national nutrition policies and sustainability standards. Through these applications, WiseFood empowers citizens to adopt healthier, more environmentally friendly food choices, putting the power of AI directly into the hands of everyday consumers.

AI-powered tools create a smarter food system by making complex information accessible and actionable. Knowledge Graphs provide the verified, structured backbone of facts, while LLMs offer an intuitive way for people to interact with that knowledge and get personalised advice. This synergy can help overcome information overload and misinformation, guiding citizens towards healthier and more sustainable food choices. The potential for applying Knowledge Graphs and Large Language Models together extends far beyond food systems. Essentially any field that deals with large amounts of complex interconnected information can benefit from this synergy.
